Running slump

#running  #running rut

Ugh.

(I should count all the posts I’ve started off with “ugh”)

I’m ready to accept it, I’m in a running rut. This happens every once in a while and often this time of year. I love running, but sometimes I just can’t gather up the motivation to really bother.

Over the long Thanksgiving weekend, I completely wrecked my sleep schedule. I typically try to wake up around 5:45-6am during the week, but over the five days of Thanksgiving weekend, I slept until 9am every morning. Since then, I have not been able to get myself back on track. I’ve been trying, but my normal tricks are failing me.

It hasn’t just been the waking up part, it’s also a complete lack of desire to get dressed and get outside. This morning, I managed to wake up at 5:45am, turn on the bedroom light, and physically get out of bed. I went to the bathroom and thought about what to wear for my run…

Then I got back in bed!

I didn’t even really fall back asleep. I just laid there. WTF, Amelia?! WTF! YOU WERE UP!

It’s always a little harder to get out there when the weather is colder, but it hasn’t even been that cold. The last couple weeks has been my favorite running weather, low 40s. And to be fair, even though it’s my favorite temperature to run in, it’s always harder to get out there when I know I’m going to be cold to start.

Anyway, not only am I in a slump, but the timing for it is terrible. I’ve got Dopey Challenge coming up in less than 3.5 weeks. After that, it’s just three months until Boston Marathon and Big Sur Marathon. I need to be able to come out of Dopey strong and feeling good. And, to do that, the runs I’m doing now are really important.

I’ve managed to not miss a run yet, other than when I was sick with some sort of weird stomach thing early last month, but it’s all been totally pieced together. I’ve been running after work instead of in the morning. I’ve been moving runs around. It’s not been very according to plan.

Anyway, I guess it is what it is. I don’t get worried anymore when I’m in a running rut because I know it happens and I know I always pull out of it. It’s just not great timing.
